IELTS Collocation: Learning collocations is highly recommended

  • One of the most important aspects of vocabulary needed for IELTS writing is collocations. These are essential for expanding your vocabulary. Essentially, collocations are combinations of 2 or 3 words that commonly go together and sound natural to native speakers. To gain some tips on building your vocabulary, check out this application.
  • If you are not familiar with how to use collocations, they may sound or appear incorrect to a native speaker.

Why are collocations so important?

  • In the IELTS marking criteria, you are evaluated on Lexical Resource (vocabulary). Your usage of collocations in the writing section, particularly in essays, will be evaluated. The Public Band Descriptors for Writing Task 2 Band 7 state the following:

"Not only are collocations important in IELTS writing, but they also prove useful in the speaking test. They contribute to a smooth and natural flow of speech, which, if employed effectively, can help you achieve a Band 7 or higher in the speaking test. However, it is crucial to properly understand and use them."

How do I learn collocations?

  • When learning new words, it is important to learn their associated or matching words that help create collocations. Avoid merely memorizing words in isolation. Collocations function as language chunks and follow various patterns.
  • The most effective way to learn collocations is through reading, listening, and creating your own sentences. I recommend maintaining a vocabulary book where you can write down example sentences. I do not advise creating word lists alone, as understanding how collocations operate within a sentence is essential. Additionally, these collocations should be regularly reviewed and implemented in practice.

Some common collocation patterns include:

  1. Verb + Noun
  2. Verb + Adverb
  3. Adjective + Noun
  4. Adverb + Adjective
  5. Noun + Noun
  6. Collocations with 'have' or 'take'
